The island of Mayon witnessed many historical sites. In 1513 the Portuguese visited it, in 1738 it was under French occupation, then the British troops occupied it in 1799. But the British left the island and went to Aden because of the scarcity of water and its scarcity. In 1857, In May 1967, after the independence of Yemen, the island of Mayun became an integral part of southern Yemen. After unification of the Yemenis in 1990, the island became part of the Republic of Yemen. To that island M are any strategic or economic importance in the late twentieth century, on the contrary the island of Socotra in the Arabian Sea.
